It is one of the characteristic trees of the Mediterranean region of Chile, especially of the sclerophyllous forest. It is able to grow in poor soils, withstand high temperature fluctuations and drought. For these reasons, its fast growth and shade-generating capacity, it is also possible to see it in urban tree planting or in reforestation projects with native trees.
It grows on north and south facing slopes, but due to drought, it is in better condition on south-facing slopes and in ravines.
